Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Award

Award Recipients For 1998

The "Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Award" was established in 1994 by Howard & Connie Clery to honor schools and individuals that have done extraordinary things to make college and university students safer.

Trisha Hart

Trisha HartMs. Hart, a student at Miami University of Ohio in Oxford, conceived and co-produced the 1998 NBC television movie "Silencing Mary" about how colleges are able to hide serious crimes like rape in secret campus courts. The movie very accurately portrayed the trauma faced by rape victims on campus and how schools keep these crimes secret particularly when star athletes are involved. The movie's main character is Mary a reporter for the school paper whose roommate is raped by a football player. The problems faced by student journalists when reporting on campus crime across the country are also very well portrayed. Mary was played by Trisha's sister Melissa Joan Hart who is best known for her role as ABC's Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

Security On Campus, Inc. is proud to present one of two student Jeanne Clery Awards to Trisha Hart for her work to bring "Silencing Mary" to broadcast. Its message reached millions of current and prospective college students and helped to make them much more aware of these problems. It's a life saving message that we are proud to honor.

Kelly Vogel

Ms. Vogel was raped while a student at the University of Scranton. Her assailant, another student, was prosecuted through an internal disciplinary proceeding but a number of the sanctions, including not being able to participate in school events, were never enforced. Vogel went public and led a serious debate about campus rape and how schools deal with and report this crime.

Security On Campus, Inc. is proud to award Kelly Vogel with one of two student Jeanne Clery Awards. Her courage is an inspiration.

Margaret and Thomas Baer

BaersSince their son Tommy was murdered outside his fraternity house on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1988 the Baers have worked tirelessly to ensure that our nation's college campuses would be safer places. Their efforts led to Tennessee being one of the first states in the nation to adopt mandatory campus crime reporting requirements. They have continued to be advocates for better reporting and safer campuses across the nation and are always there when others are in need.

Security On Campus, Inc. is proud to present the Baers with a special Jeanne Clery Award for their ten years of service to the nation.

Michigan State University

MSU has taken the tough steps necessary to deal with the crime, including alcohol and drug abuse, on their campus. They have taken a zero tolerance stand on the deadly problems of binge drinking and drug abuse. MSU's President Peter McPherson and Police Chief Bruce Benson have aggressively taken the lead and made it clear that they are serious about addressing campus crime. The school is very forthright about crime on campus which allows for the community to better evaluate and address it. Additionally they have a strong commitment to providing the resources necessary for their security department to be able to do their job properly.

Security On Campus, Inc. is very impressed with the work being done at Michigan State and is proud to present them with the campus Jeanne Clery Award for their incredible work.
