Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Award presentation to the University of Pennsylvania-Maureen Rush, Judith Rodin, U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, Howard Clery, and Connie Clery.

Connie and I, and the staff of SOC are delighted to be here today to present the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Award to the University of Pennsylvania.

Because we live in a violent society, this award recognizes the Challenges facing our Universities and their Real World Responses. Nationwide, university campuses are faced with High Risk Drinking and Illegal Drug Use which fuel student-on-student violence.

Penn has risen to this Challenge with an outstanding Response with its various security techniques to ensure a Safe Campus.

We congratulate President Rodin and Vice President Rush for meeting this challenge.

Because we are on the Penn Campus – it is more than fitting – we all recognize the Great Service Senator Arlen Specter has given to help reduce Campus Crime and to protect the rights of Student Victims of Campus Crime.

Senator Specter introduced and got Congress and the President to pass –

• The Campus Security Act of 1990
• The Campus Sexual Assault Victims’ Bill of Rights of 1992
• Plus Important Amendments to the now titled Jeanne Clery Act in 1998

Senator Specter and his staff listened to us and Responded. He is our Hero.
