College Of William And Mary Reverses Position On Poster Naming Accused Rapist

Williamsburg, VA-The College of William and Mary announced on Friday that they will allow a campus rape victim to display a poster naming the former student she accuses of raping her. Last week the college had removed the poster from the University Center over concerns it violated federal student privacy guidelines.

“We are very pleased to see that the College of William and Mary has reversed their position and will allow the victim to exercise her First Amendment rights,” said S. Daniel Carter the vice president of Security On Campus, Inc. a non-profit victim advocacy organization that asked the college to allow the poster back up.

The organization earlier this week had shared information with the college detailing 1998 amendments to the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) that allow this type of information to be released publicly.

“After reviewing the new information we received, it no longer appears that the posting would create a liability for the College under FERPA,” said W. Samuel Sadler the vice president for student affairs at the College of William and Mary.
