Legislation Would Fund $50 Million To Combat Campus Alcohol & Other Drug AbuseWashington, DC-A bill introduced last month during the waning days of the 107th Congress, the Communities Combating College Drinking and Drug Use Act (S. 3167), by U.S. Senators Mike DeWine (R-OH) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) seeks to combat the issue of underage drinking on college and university campuses. The bill would award $50 million dollars in grants for states to create statewide coalitions among colleges and universities and surrounding communities to work together. The bill supports projects such as providing alcohol-free events, support groups, and information to students to reinforce that alcohol and drug-use is not the only way to have fun. In the past, coalitions have worked to establish regulations both on and off campus, such as registration of kegs. "It is up to us to change the drinking culture which has been perpetuated by years of complacency," said DeWine. "We must protect the health and education of our young people by changing this culture of abuse and that is what my bill will do." DeWine will work in the 108th Congress to include the proposal as part of the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act next year according to a statement released by his office. Legislative Roundup For The 107th Congress Washington, DC-The recently completed 107th Congress considered 17 bills directly related to college and university campus safety issues. Despite the high level of interest, none of the bills passed or were included in other larger bills that did. Issues included missing students, fire safety, gambling, and binge drinking.
A summary of each of the 17 bills is available in the "Congress" section of the SOC web site at: http://www.campussafety.org/congress/107.html Many of these issues are likely to be revisited when Congress reauthorizes the Higher Education Act next year and will be tracked on the SOC web site.
